Critical Role Campaign 4 Reveals the Soldiers Group

From the very beginning of the fourth campaign, new Dungeon Master Brennan Mulligan has kept fans guessing with extensive world-building, a colorful mix of characters, and a gripping narrative showcasing celestial beings, fiends, and dark forces expanding in influence within the urban setting.

Note: Spoilers for Episode 3 of Campaign 4 follow below.

The Warrior Group Unveiled

Episode 3 finished on a huge suspense moment and introduced the premier party of heroes who will split off from the central cast to undertake their independent quest, apart from the remaining groups.

This warrior group includes Teor (played by Travis Willingham), the nimble rogue (the talented performer), the strong-willed figure (Whitney Moore), the cleric (Sam Riegel), and Kattigan Vale (Robbie Daymond).

The Reason for Division

Given 13 cast members, it was clear from the outset that having everyone at one table would be unfeasible.

Hence, the first four episodes of the new season serve as an Overture, intertwining the characters’ stories before splitting into three distinct groups: Fighters, Planners, and Questers.

Characteristics of the Combat Party

According to the Dungeon Master, the combat-focused party is for players who prefer a classically intense combat and conflict-driven narrative style where diplomatic options are few and far between.

Initially, characters like the hesitant healer Wicander Halovar might seem unsuited, but the events of episode 3 show why these particular heroes are best suited for the combat party.

Why They Must Go

First, the party has a clear idea where to go next after a brutal first encounter with The Crow Keepers.

An old friend of the deceased character—whose death started the story’s plot—exploited the enemy for his own means, invading Thjazi’s hideout, attacking Thimble, and swiping all the powerful objects to sell off.

The traitor then cleared his obligations and ran away to a fortified location in the remote area, north of the urban center, with Cyd hot on his heels.

Character Drivers

Secondly, each adventurer has a personal reason to leave the city Dol-Makjar:

  • The agile hero, as the companion and best friend, seeks vengeance.
  • The adventurer is familiar with the northern area and cautions that it is a hostile place.
  • Tyranny and The cleric, having defied his family’s wishes to eliminate Teor and instead rescued him, have nowhere else to go.
  • Yet, their position as prominent individuals in the powerful family could help the team reach locations they typically wouldn’t be able to.
  • Additionally, The grateful character swore a life debt to The cleric for his deliverance and will now follow him anywhere.

Fugitives

In addition, all of them are hunted by the authorities that rule the setting for a variety of reasons, making lingering locally too risky:

  • Thimble and The hero are recognized lawbreakers.
  • The strong figure and The cleric defied the influential house and the legion of demons they are partnered with.
  • The fighter is marked for death by House Halovar.

This means them no alternative but to head to the northern region in search of the traitor.

Future Episodes

Based on the latest episode’s Cooldown, we discover that the combat party won’t be around next week, leaving the other eight players to form the Questers and Schemers tables.

Audiences can look forward to finding out which characters will be in which group in Campaign 4’s concluding setup installment, available to watch on October 24.
